FREMONT, Neb. – Griffyn Doughty scored 18 points and Dickinson State outscored Midland by seven in the second half to earn a 75-72 road win Friday night at the Wikert Event Center.
With the win, the Blue Hawks improved to 1-1 on the season.
Trailing 41-37 at the break, DSU shot 44.4 percent in the second half and hit 7-of-14 from three-point range to take control. Doughty scored 16 of his 18 points after halftime, finishing 6-of-14 from the floor and 4-of-11 from beyond the arc.
Cordell Stinson added 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. The senior forward's layup with 22 second left in the contest gave DSU a 73-72 lead and also dished out four assists in 34 minutes.
Nate Visentin finished with eight points, four rebounds, and two assists, going a perfect 6-for-6 from the line. Quincy Linton added seven points and six assists while helping steady the offense.
"Very proud of our group," Head Coach Derek Selvig said. "We are making silly mistakes on both ends of the floor and still found a way to win. This group has a lot of maturing to do, but they play for each other and that's what we are focusing on."
Dickinson State shot 47.2 percent from the field and 42.9 percent (12-of-28) from three. The Blue Hawks also converted 13-of-17 from the free throw line (76.5%) and edged Midland on the glass, 35-33.
The DSU bench provided a spark with 22 points, including nine from DC Stewart on 3-of-3 shooting from deep. Weston Zacher added eight points and four rebounds in 15 minutes.
Trey McCain led Midland (0-2) with 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Anthony Simon and Jeff Rozelle III each added 11 for the Warriors, who shot just 37 percent in the second half after a hot start.
