Blue Hawks Split Doubleheader with Mayville State to Close Fall Slate

MAYVILLE, N.D. — Dickinson State closed its fall baseball schedule with a doubleheader split against Mayville State on Wednesday, dropping the opener 5-3 before bouncing back with a 7-3 win in Game 2 at Scott Berry Field.

Game 1: Mayville State 5, Dickinson State 3

Despite outhitting the Comets 6-3, Dickinson State was unable to overcome seven walks and three unearned runs in a 5-3 loss.

Senior catcher Ty Farwell led the Blue Hawk offense, going 2-for-2 with two doubles, two RBI, a walk, and a hit-by-pitch. Jace Buchanan reached base twice and scored a run, while Logan Braaten and Sawyer Bryner each recorded a hit. Braaten drove in a run in the fourth with a single to left.

Dickinson State opened the scoring in the fourth, but Mayville State answered with three runs in the bottom half, highlighted by a solo home run from Denton and a two-run single by McQueen. Two more runs came across in the fifth after defensive miscues by the Blue Hawks extended the inning.

The Blue Hawks made a push in the seventh as Farwell's second double plated Buchanan and Bryner to make it 5-3, but the rally stalled with the tying run at second base.

Tate Williams took the loss, allowing three earned runs on three hits and four walks over four innings. Relievers Noah Aliff and Cooper Van Luchene combined for two innings of scoreless work.

Game 2: Dickinson State 7, Mayville State 3

Dickinson State responded in the nightcap with timely hitting and strong bullpen work to secure its first win of the fall.

Senior designated hitter Sawyer Bryner delivered the go-ahead blow, launching a two-run home run in the sixth to break a 3-3 tie. He finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.

Graduate outfielder Moses Dokes added a two-run home run in the seventh to extend the lead, while sophomore center fielder Jadyn Roberts led off the game with a solo homer. Buchanan tripled and walked, and Farwell contributed a double and scored once.

Patrick Dietz started and worked three innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits with two strikeouts. Junior left-hander Mason Lunzman (2-0) earned the win in relief, tossing four shutout innings with four strikeouts and one hit allowed.

Mayville State tied the game 3-3 in the third inning, but Lunzman retired 12 of the 13 batters he faced, while the offense provided insurance runs in the sixth and seventh.

The Blue Hawks totaled nine hits, including three home runs and a triple. Dickinson State also turned a double play and limited the Comets to just one hit over the final five innings.
