Dickinson State Falls to No. 5 Montana Tech in Season Finale

DICKINSON, N.D. – Dickinson State closed out its 2025 football season with a 31-7 loss to No. 5 Montana Tech on Saturday afternoon at the Biesiot Activities Center in Frontier Conference East Division action.

The Blue Hawks (3-7, 1-5 Frontier East) fell behind early as the unbeaten Orediggers (10-0, 5-0) scored on their first two possessions and built a 31-0 halftime lead. Dickinson State's lone score came midway through the third quarter.

Montana Tech opened the game with a 27-yard field goal by Casey Kautzman, then quickly added a 34-yard touchdown pass from Levi Torgerson to Nick Michelotti. The Orediggers extended the lead with three second-quarter touchdowns, including a 45-yard scoring run by quarterback Jarrett Wilson and two touchdown passes to Torgerson.

Dickinson State answered in the third quarter with its most productive drive of the afternoon. The Blue Hawks went 82 yards in 12 plays, capped by a 1-yard touchdown run by Hudsen Grovom. Quinn Kalpin added the point-after to make it 31-7 with 3:25 left in the quarter.

Jace Friesz threw for 173 yards on 15-of-24 passing, while Grovom added 29 yards through the air and the team's only touchdown on the ground. Adrien Calderon and Cale Gundlach led all DSU receivers with five catches apiece, combining for 125 yards. Dawson Zuroff led the rushing attack with 42 yards on six carries.

Defensively, Riley Waters recorded nine total tackles, including 0.5 for loss. Chase Selle added six tackles and a pass breakup, while Wyatt Faircloth registered a tackle for loss.

Montana Tech outgained DSU 319-285 and was more efficient on third down, converting 6-of-12 attempts compared to the Blue Hawks' 2-of-12. DSU was also flagged eight times for 76 yards.

"Tech has a very good team," head coach Pete Stanton said. "We played fine at times, but they made us pay on both sides of the ball. We played hard. The season didn't meet our expectations and standards, and we have a lot of work to do. Thanks to our seniors for all they did for us."
