DICKINSON, N.D. — Dickinson State opened its 2025 fall schedule with a doubleheader split against Mayville State on Wednesday at Dakota Community Bank and Trust Ballpark, falling 8-7 in the opener before answering with a 12-9 win in the nightcap.
Game 1: Mayville State 8, Dickinson State 7
The Blue Hawks led 4-2 through five before the Comets scored three in the sixth and three in the seventh to take an 8-4 advantage; DSU's three-run rally in the seventh came up short. Mayville State finished with 11 hits to DSU's 10.
Sophomore outfielder Jadyn Roberts put Dickinson State on the board with a solo home run in the first. Ty Farwell added an RBI single as part of a two-hit day, and pinch-hitter Jacob McIntyre delivered a two-run single in the seventh to pull the Blue Hawks within one.
Dickinson State also manufactured runs in the second with a sacrifice that was misplayed and Farwell's RBI knock; Roberts, Farwell and Jace Buchanan each swiped a base.
Junior left-hander Mason Lunzman worked five innings, allowing two runs on six hits with two strikeouts. Patrick Dietz took the loss in relief. Mayville State's Lundmark earned the win, and Droog recorded the save.
Game 2: Dickinson State 12, Mayville State 9
DSU trailed 4-0 after a half inning but answered with two in the first and four in the second, then put up six in the sixth to secure the split. The Blue Hawks totaled 11 hits.
Graduate outfielder Moses Dokes went 3-for-4 with eight RBIs, including a two-run homer in the first inning and a grand slam in the sixth. Brandon Hegedus added a solo home run to lead off the six-run sixth, and Sawyer Bryner collected three hits with two runs scored. Shortstop Ramon Teran was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs.
Dokes' grand slam capped the decisive sixth that also featured a Teran RBI single and a pinch-run appearance by Jack Price before Dokes cleared the bases.
On the mound, Tate Williams started for Dickinson State and struck out four in three innings. Dominic Phillips and Collin Fortier covered the middle frames. Logan Smith earned the win with a scoreless sixth, and Hegedus worked a 1-2-3 seventh for the save.
Game 2 also included clean late defense and baserunning: Bryner stole two bases, and DSU closed it out without a Mayville baserunner in the seventh.
With the split, Dickinson State moves to 1-1; Mayville State is 2-2.
