Dickinson State pulls away late to top Mayville State, 71-61

MAYVILLE, N.D. – Dickinson State used a late fourth-quarter push to earn a 71-61 road win over Mayville State in Frontier Conference action Friday evening.

The Blue Hawks (5-11, 3-9 Frontier) saw a 13-point second-half lead erased when the Comets tied the game at 52 midway through the fourth quarter. From there, Dickinson State outscored Mayville 19-9 the rest of the way, closing the game with a 7-for-10 effort at the free-throw line in the final minute.

Kaylin Garza led a balanced scoring effort for the Blue Hawks with 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting. She added three assists and two steals. Makena Hauge contributed 11 points and eight rebounds off the bench, while J'Ell Garfield scored 10 points, including a key three-pointer with under five minutes to play. Dylan Stedillie and Anhelica Shanrock each added nine points, and Kyrie Alldredge chipped in six.

Dickinson State led 17-14 after the first quarter and pushed the margin to 30-21 at halftime. The Blue Hawks took their largest lead at 48-35 late in the third quarter before Mayville State used a 17-4 run to tie the game at 52 with 5:07 remaining.

Garza broke the tie with a layup, and Garfield followed with a three-pointer to give DSU a 55-52 lead. The Blue Hawks maintained control from there, with baskets by Hauge and Allie Kohn, and eight free throws in the final minute to secure the win.

Stedillie made two free throws with 16 seconds left to help seal the win. Shanrock went 4-for-6 from the line in the final minute, and Alldredge added one more as the Blue Hawks closed the game on a 19-9 run to pull away.

Dickinson State shot 42.3 percent from the field (22-for-52) and 35.0 percent from three-point range (7-for-20), while outrebounding Mayville State 34-29. The Blue Hawks turned 17 Comet turnovers into 14 points and got 32 points from their bench.

Hannah Stark led Mayville State (1-15, 0-12 Frontier) with a game-high 27 points and eight rebounds. Laela Jensen added 12 points and seven boards. The Comets shot 29.5 percent from the field and just 6-of-23 from beyond the arc.
