Dickinson State splits opening weekend action

SIOUX CENTER— Dickinson State dropped a pair of contests Saturday at the ASB Dome, falling 6–5 to Briar Cliff before coming up short 6–5 against Dordt. 

Briar Cliff struck first in the opening game, scoring two runs in the first inning and stringing together a single and RBI groundout before adding an RBI double. The Chargers extended the lead to 4–0 in the second inning.  

Dickinson State responded in the second inning. Baylee Berg drove in the Blue Hawks' first run with a groundout, and Jersi Morse followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit to two. The Blue Hawks evened the score in the third inning when Celina Wilharm tripled home a run and B. Lijewski brought in another with a fielder's choice. 

Briar Cliff regained the lead in the fourth inning on an RBI single, but Dickinson State answered again in the fifth. Lijewski doubled to right field to score Stocktyn Stevenson and tied the game at 5–5.The game remained tied into the seventh inning before Briar Cliff pushed across the deciding run.  

Stevenson finished with two hits and two runs scored, while Lijewski collected two hits and two RBIs. Wilharm added a triple and an RBI. In the circle, Ava Jahner started and allowed four runs in 1.2 innings before Reannan Butler worked the final 5.1 innings, allowing two runs while striking out four. 

In the second game, Dordt used early power to build an advantage. After a triple and an error produced the first run in the opening inning, back-to-back solo home runs gave Dordt a 3–0 lead. 

Dickinson State cut into the margin in the third inning when Jessa Duggan doubled and Ashlee Potter followed with a two-run home run. The Blue Hawks tied the game in the fourth inning on Duggan's RBI single and moved ahead in the fifth. Allyson Farrington tripled and later scored on Stevenson's single, and Hubby drove in another run on a fielder's choice that included an error, putting Dickinson State up 5–3. 

Dordt responded in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run home run to tie the game. The score remained even entering the seventh inning. Dickinson State advanced a runner to third in the top half but could not score, and Dordt capitalized in the bottom half. A single and another hit put two runners on before an RBI single brought home the winning run. 

Potter led Dickinson State with two RBIs, while Stevenson recorded two hits and an RBI. Duggan added two hits and drove in a run. Reagan King pitched 6.1 innings, allowing six runs, five earned, while recording one strikeout. 

Blue Hawks will continue with their season next weekend in the Jamestown Dome.
