Dickinson State blanks Cornerstone 8-0 behind Dietz, big second inning

AUBURNDALE, Fla. — Dickinson State used a seven-run second inning and strong work on the mound to earn an 8-0 win over Cornerstone on March 10 in Auburndale, Florida. Patrick Dietz set the tone for the Blue Hawks, working eight scoreless innings to help Dickinson State move to 10-10 on the season. Cornerstone dropped to 4-14.

Dietz was efficient throughout his outing. He allowed six hits, walked one and struck out six over eight innings on 90 pitches. Cooper VanLuchene handled the ninth, allowing no runs and striking out one as Dickinson State completed the shutout, their second in three games. Cornerstone was held scoreless despite putting at least one runner on base in five innings. Dickinson State also turned two double plays behind its pitching staff.

The Blue Hawks did all of the damage they needed in the second. After Moses Dokes was hit by a pitch and Jaden Salazar singled, Jadyn Roberts reached on an error that brought in the game's first run. Ramon Teran followed with an RBI single to make it 2-0. Buchanan then reached on an error that allowed Roberts to score, and Dickinson State took advantage from there. Ty Farwell delivered a two-run single to push the lead to 5-0, and Luis Rodriguez capped the inning with a two-run home run for a 7-0 advantage. Of Dickinson State's seven runs in the inning, five were earned.

Farwell led Dickinson State offensively, finishing 3-for-5 with three RBIs, including an RBI triple in the eighth inning that added the game's final run. Rodriguez drove in two runs and scored once, while Teran went 2-for-4 with a walk, two runs scored, one RBI and a stolen base. Salazar added a hit and a run scored, and Buchanan scored once, drove in one and stole two bases. Dickinson State totaled seven hits and drew six walks.

The Blue Hawks threatened again in the third when they loaded the bases with two outs, but Cornerstone reliever Jaden Franceschina kept the deficit at seven. Dickinson State added its final run in the eighth after Teran doubled and later scored on Farwell's triple. That insurance run followed several strong defensive innings from Dietz, who worked around traffic in the third and sixth. In the sixth, Cornerstone put two singles together and also reached on catcher's interference, but Dietz got a groundout to third to end the inning and keep the shutout intact.

Cornerstone collected six hits, with Drew Goodman and Michael Ruiz recording two apiece. Ruiz had a double, but the Golden Eagles did not record an extra-base hit beyond that and went without an RBI chance breakthrough against Dietz and VanLuchene. Josiah Stairs took the loss for Cornerstone, allowing seven runs, five earned, on four hits in 2 2/3 innings.
