Dickinson State drops Sunday Frontier Conference doubleheader to Mayville State

DICKINSON, N.D. — Dickinson State dropped both games of a Frontier Conference baseball doubleheader Sunday at DCB&T Ballpark, falling 19-3 in seven innings in the opener before an 12-8 loss in the nightcap. The Blue Hawks finished the day with 18 hits across the two games but could not overcome Mayville State's production at the plate and on the bases.

Game 1

Dickinson State stayed within reach early before Mayville State pulled away in a 19-3 win in the first game of the day. The Comets scored once in the second, twice in the third and then broke the game open with six runs in the fourth. Mayville State added four runs in the fifth, three in the sixth and three more in the seventh.

The Blue Hawks answered with two runs in the second and one in the third. Jace Buchanan doubled and scored in the second, while Moses Dokes drove in Dickinson State's lone RBI of the game. Luis Rodriguez also scored, and Wyatt Wilharm added a double as Dickinson State finished with six hits. Jacob McIntyre and Ramon Teran each recorded one hit.

Mayville State hit seven home runs in the opener and finished with 19 hits. Cam Goff led the Comets by going 4 for 5 with three home runs and seven RBIs. Jack McQueen added a home run and four RBIs.

Patrick Dietz took the loss for Dickinson State after allowing nine runs, seven earned, over 3 2/3 innings. Mason Manning worked 1 1/3 innings, Anthony Hanson threw one inning and Rogelio Gonzalez covered the final inning.

Game 2

Dickinson State showed more offensive balance in the second game but came up short, 12-8.

Mayville State scored in each of the first five innings and led 7-5 after Dickinson State's four-run fourth inning and single run in the fifth. The Comets added two runs in the seventh and three in the eighth to build separation.

The Blue Hawks finished with 12 hits and put together contributions throughout the lineup. Ramon Teran went 3 for 5 with two RBIs and a double. Jaden Salazar finished 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two walks. Luis Rodriguez went 2 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Wyatt Wilharm and Moses Dokes each had two hits. Dokes drove in one run, and Buchanan added an RBI.

Dickinson State scored once in the third, four times in the fourth, once in the fifth, once in the seventh and once in the eighth. The Blue Hawks also drew eight walks and were hit by two pitches, but stranded 12 runners.

Dominic Phillips made the start and took the loss, allowing five runs, three earned, in 2 1/3 innings. Jerry Santiago Jr. followed with 1 2/3 innings and allowed one run. Brandon Hegedus, Cooper VanLuchene, Noah Aliff, Tyler Cutler and Trent Chavez also saw time on the mound.

Mayville State finished the second game with 13 hits, nine walks and nine stolen bases. Jack McQueen went 3 for 4 with four RBIs and four runs scored, while Robert Gurney and Jaxon Parker each homered.

Dickinson State moved to 16-15 overall and 3-5 in conference play after the doubleheader, while Mayville State improved to 17-11 overall and 4-4 in league play.
