AUBURNDALE, Fla. — Dickinson State opened its Florida trip with a doubleheader sweep of Aquinas on Saturday, winning 13-6 in the opener and 10-0 in the nightcap. The Game 2 victory also marked the 100th win at Dickinson State for head coach Michael Dahl.
"It's a really good start to the Florida trip," Dahl said. "We played well in all aspects of the game. Great job by our offense putting up 23 runs and starting pitching from Mason Lunzman and Tate Williams. My hope is we have the same intent and purpose for tomorrow's game before our day off. As always, Hawks are up."
Dickinson State combined for 23 runs on 26 hits across the two games while limiting Aquinas to six runs on the day.
Game 1: Dickinson State 13, Aquinas 6
Dickinson State scored seven runs in the first inning and never trailed in a 13-6 win over Aquinas in the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader.
The Blue Hawks sent 12 batters to the plate in the first inning, taking advantage of two Aquinas errors, two walks and four hits. Jaden Salazar started the scoring with a two-run single, Ramon Teran added an RBI single and Jadyn Roberts delivered a two-run double. Roberts later scored on a throwing error to make it 7-0.
Dickinson State added another run in the second when Moses Dokes doubled home Sawyer Bryner to extend the lead to 8-0.
Aquinas responded in the third with a grand slam by Nguyen to cut the deficit to 8-4, but Dickinson State answered in the fourth with five runs.
Teran drove in a run with a single, Kadin Finders added an RBI single and Luis Rodriguez followed with a two-run single. Wyatt Wilharm capped the inning with an RBI single to push the lead to 13-4.
Rodriguez finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Teran went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs, while Dokes added two hits and an RBI. Salazar drove in two runs and Roberts had a double and two RBIs.
Mason Lunzman earned the win after pitching six innings. He allowed six runs on six hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Cooper VanLuchene worked a scoreless seventh inning in relief.
Nguyen hit two home runs for Aquinas, including the four-run shot in the third and a solo homer in the fifth.
Game 2: Dickinson State 10, Aquinas 0
Dickinson State completed the sweep with a 10-0 shutout in the second game of the doubleheader, giving head coach Michael Dahl his 100th victory with the Blue Hawks.
The Blue Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Ramon Teran doubled to score Wyatt Wilharm. Dickinson State made it 2-0 in the third on Ty Farwell's RBI single that brought home Jadyn Roberts.
Dickinson State broke the game open with five runs in the fifth inning. After Kadin Finders and Roberts reached base and Jace Buchanan drew a walk to load the bases, Farwell delivered a two-run single. Wilharm followed with a two-run single, and Teran added an RBI single later in the inning to extend the lead to 7-0.
The Blue Hawks added three more runs in the sixth inning. An Aquinas error brought home Buchanan before Dokes doubled to left to drive in two runs and make it 10-0.
Farwell led Dickinson State at the plate, going 2 for 4 with three RBIs. Wilharm finished 2 for 2 with two RBIs and three runs scored, while Teran collected two hits and two RBIs. Dokes added a double and two RBIs, and Roberts recorded two hits and scored twice.
Tate Williams earned the win after throwing six scoreless innings, allowing four hits with two walks and nine strikeouts. Noah Aliff pitched the seventh inning and did not allow a hit.
Dickinson State held Aquinas scoreless while completing the doubleheader sweep.
