Blue Hawks split day one at VCSU

VALLEY CITY, N.D. — Dickinson State split Friday's Frontier Conference baseball doubleheader against Valley City State, winning the opener 4-3 before dropping the second game 9-5.

Game 1: Dickinson State 4, Valley City State 3

Dickinson State scored once in the first inning and added three runs in the third to hold off Valley City State in the opener.

Luis Rodriguez went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Moses Dokes finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Jadyn Roberts hit a solo home run. Wyatt Wilharm added two hits.

Mason Lunzman earned the win, allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits with three strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings. Trent Chavez recorded the final two outs for the save.

Game 2: Valley City State 9, Dickinson State 5

Dickinson State took a 3-0 lead in the third inning on home runs from Roberts and Dokes, but Valley City State answered with four runs in the bottom half and led the rest of the way.

Rodriguez and Wilharm each homered in the ninth inning for DSU. Rodriguez, Wilharm and Jaden Salazar each had two hits. Dokes drove in two runs.

Valley City State scored one run in the fourth, three in the sixth and one in the eighth. Tate Williams took the loss for Dickinson State.

The Blue Hawks are 23-22 overall after Friday's games. Dickinson State will need to win both games of Saturday's doubleheader to secure the No. 2 seed in next week's Frontier Conference tournament in Dickinson and earn a first-round bye.
