Derek Selvig enters his seventh season as head men's basketball coach at Dickinson State in 2026-27. Through six seasons, Selvig has compiled a 76-95 record while overseeing the development of numerous all-conference performers and leading the Blue Hawks to one of the program's most successful seasons in recent history.
In 2024-25, Selvig guided Dickinson State to its first North Star Athletic Association regular-season and tournament championships in 20 years and the program's first NAIA National Tournament appearance in two decades. The Blue Hawks finished 19-11, and Selvig was named the NSAA Coach of the Year. Dickinson State led the conference defensively while also ranking among the league's most efficient offensive teams.
That season, Kose Egbule earned NAIA Third Team All-America honors after being named the NSAA Player of the Year and a first-team all-conference selection. John Evans joined Egbule on the first team, while Cordell Stinson and Trey Stevens earned second-team honors. Stinson was also selected to the NSAA All-Defensive Team, and Aidan Fishell received honorable mention recognition.
Dickinson State transitioned to the Frontier Conference in 2025-26. Griffyn Doughty earned Second Team All-Frontier Conference honors after leading the Blue Hawks with 15.1 points per game and totaling 423 points during his sophomore season.
Before taking over at Dickinson State, Selvig served as an assistant coach at Montana Tech from 2016-19. During his time with the Orediggers, he helped the program record its highest win totals in two decades, post back-to-back winning seasons and earn its first victory over an NCAA Division I opponent.
Selvig's coaching career followed a successful playing career. He played professionally in Gotha, Germany, with the BiG Oettinger Rockets before returning to the United States as an assistant coach at Billings West High School in Montana.
Selvig played collegiately at the University of Montana from 2007-12. The 7-foot forward helped the Grizzlies make back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances and finished his career with 844 points and 560 rebounds while shooting 40 percent from 3-point range.
A native of Glendive, Montana, Selvig starred at Dawson County High School, where he helped the Red Devils compile a 44-4 record during his junior and senior seasons while playing for his father, Doug. He was a four-time state tournament qualifier and was named the 2007 Montana Gatorade Player of the Year.
Selvig resides in Dickinson with his wife, Maddie.
