Dickinson, ND – The Dickinson State University Blue Hawks used a stingy defense to pull away from Dakota State University 23-3 on Homecoming Saturday afternoon. The win moves Dickinson State to 5-0 on the season.
The Blue Hawks got the scoring started on a Jeremiah Paine field goal from 27-yards out to give the home team a 3-0 lead with 8:46 left in the first quarter. After a Blue Hawk defensive stand, the offense started to find its groove. Drew Boedecker found Tyger Frye in the back of the endzone for a seven yard touchdown pass to give the Blue Hawks their first touchdown of the day. Jeremiah Paine kicked the extra point and the Blue Hawks led 10-0 with 14:13 in the second quarter. The offense put together another long drive deep into Dakota State territory when Jeremiah Paine connected on his second field goal of the day from 28-yards out to extend the Blue Hawk lead to 13-0 with 4:25 left in the second quarter. The Trojans couldn't get anything going before the half and the Blue Hawks went into halftime leading 13-0.
The third quarter saw both defenses play well as Dakota State scored the only points of the quarter on a Caleb Nielsen 40-yard field goal with 1:36 left to play in the third to make the score 13-3. The Blue Hawk offense answered with three points of their own on a Jeremiah Paine 37-yard field goal. The kick gave the Blue Hawks a 16-3 lead with 13:39 left in the game. A Dakota State fumble on a punt gave Dickinson State great field position and the offense cashed in on a 2-yard touchdown run by Derek Tabor. The extra point was good and the Blue Hawks extended their lead to 23-3 with 5:35 left in the game. The defense added one more stop to seal the game and the Blue Hawks came away with the victory.
"We were very pleased to get a hard-fought win. Our defense was outstanding and we did a great job with field position and our kicking game. Our offense did a good job in the fourth quarter getting a big drive to put them away. It was a great homecoming win," stated head coach Pete Stanton.
Individual Stats
The Blue Hawk offense churned out 352 total yards in the contest with 236 yards coming through the air and 116 yards on the ground. Drew Boedecker was 19-29 for 204 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Jaret Lee led the receivers with six catches and 98 yards. Riley Linder was the leading rusher for the Blue Hawks with 47 yards on 17 carries. The Blue Hawk defense was led by Reece Hoherz with nine tackles on the day. Nick Miller wasn't far behind with eight tackles and Dawson McGlothlin also had an interception for the defense.

The Blue Hawks are back in action next Saturday, October 17th at Mayville State University. Kickoff is set for 1:00pm.
