ORANGE CITY - Ten Blue Hawks broke into the scoring column, but none were able to reach double digits, as Dickinson State (3-4) fell to #15 Dordt University (5-0), 70-46, to wrap up the Pizza Ranch Classic in Orange City, Iowa.
The Defenders, coming off a national title game appearance, showed their strength in the first half, jumping out to an 11-2 lead to start the game. By quarter's end, DU was leading 17-6 with Samantha Oase and Lindsay Peterson as the only Blue Hawks to score for DSU. The second quarter was much of the same, as Dordt started the quarter on a 19-6 run to stretch their lead all the way to 24, 36-12. The teams entered the half with DU leading 38-17.
The second half, however, was a different story as the Blue Hawk defense held Dordt to just 32 points and 0-10 three-point shooting. Unfortunately for DSU, the shots from deep didn't fall for them either as they went just 1-6 from three with McKenzie Johnson knocking down the lone make. In the fourth quarter, the Blue Hawks outscored Dordt 16-13 again holding the Defenders without a three-point field goal, but again only one DSU shots from deep fell, a triple from Tayte Kohn with 1:34 left.
"We defended really well for the most part." said coach Eric Nelson. "Unfortunately, we couldn't get any shots to fall, especially in the first half. Dordt is a really good team, and we weren't able to match them offensively. We are looking forward to getting back to practice and finally playing a home game."
Peterson and Heather LaBree led the Blue Hawks with eight points each, while Oase added six points and nine rebounds. For the game, Dordt won the rebounding battle 39-37 and the turnover battle 19-8.
