Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Bench has big game but Blue Hawks come up just short against #16 Carroll

DICKINSON, N.D. - Jaiden Wright gave the Blue Hawks 15 points and five rebounds, and Bradyn Palmer added 11 points, off the bench to lead Dickinson State (1-3, 0-0) but #16 Carroll College (2-0, 0-0) tallied 11 steals on the game and pulled away for a 70-59 victory.

Both teams got off to a slow start offensively, with the Saints leading just 4-3 with four minutes already elapsed. Wright scored the first six Blue Hawk points after checking in at the 17:41 mark. The Carroll defense was smothering in the first half, causing 11 Blue Hawk turnovers, but the Saints could not pull away, going 0-6 from three in the half. A Wright and-one layup with 1:23 left in the half proved to be the final points of the half, as the teams went into the locker room with Carroll leading 37-24.

"Pretty disappointed in our first half." quoted head coach Derek Selvig. "The whole first half was very uncharacteristic of our team."

The second half started with a 6-0 Carroll run before Jake Daniel hit a three-pointer to stop the bleeding and bring the Blue Hawks back to within 16 at 43-27. With 10:55 left in the game, Carroll took a 51-33 lead and looked ready to run away with the contest. Dickinson State had other ideas. A 22-9 Blue Hawk run started by the second unit brought DSU to within 10 at 60-55 with 3:38 remaining. Unfortunately, that was as close as they would get, as the nationally ranked Saints used their size and experience to hold the Blue Hawks at bay and take the 70-59 victory.

Selvig was much more pleased with the second half, "The second half effort was phenomenal. Really proud of the fight that we showed. We desperately need to put a full game together and we will be right where we want to be."
