MAYVILLE – Lindsay Peterson went 4-6 from long range, and scored a game-high 17 points, but NSAA-leading Mayville State had an answer to every Dickinson State run, as the Comets defeated DSU, 65-48, on Friday evening.
An Oase jump shot tied the game 2-2 early, but an 8-0 Mayville State run gave the Comets a lead that they would never surrender. Lindsay Peterson and Oase got the Blue Hawks back to within four, 10-6, on back-to-back buckets, but the MSU defense stifled the Blue Hawks for the rest of the first quarter as their lead grew to 22-11 after the first ten minutes.
The second quarter saw the Comet defense continue to give the Blue Hawk offense fits, as a Jenna Jacobson three-pointer with 4:58 left in the half was the first field goal by DSU in the quarter. The only other point scored before that mark came on a Peterson free-throw a minute earlier. The Peterson three cut the lead to 27-15, and the deficit remained around that mark for the rest of the half as the teams headed to the locker room with MSU leading 34-20.
A quick 4-0 run out of the break saw the Blue Hawks cut their deficit to 10, 34-24, forcing Mayville State to use an early timeout. McKenzie Johnson extended the run to 6-0 with a mid-range jumper, but a transition bucket off a turnover got the Comets on the board in the second half and they were able to push their lead back to 12 on their next possession. The Blue Hawks got back within 11, 42-31, on a late three by Peterson, but a banked in buzzer-beating three by MSU sent them to the fourth quarter up 45-31.
Peterson knocked down another shot from deep early in the fourth quarter, but Mayville responded with another run to stretch their lead to a game-high 18 points. DSU didn't back down, however, responding with a 7-0 run to again get back within 11, 55-41, with just over five minutes left in the game. Peterson stayed hot from deep, knocking down her fourth three ball of the game to make it 58-46 with 3:47 to go, but Mayville State continued to maintain their double-digit lead and the game ended with the Comets ahead 65-48.
Oase just missed out on a double-double, scoring eight points and pulling down 14 rebounds, but no other Blue Hawks joined Peterson in double figures.
