DICKINSON – Another dominating defensive effort led Dickinson State to a wire-to-wire statement win over North Star Athletic Association leader Mayville State, 68-50, on Saturday evening.
The Comets entered the game averaging 99 points per game and sporting a 17-4 overall record, including 7-1 in NSAA play. Dickinson State had little care for the past, as they held the powerful Comet offense to just 50 points on 18-62 (29 percent) shooting with smothering defense and gritty hustle. Gus Wright led the Blue Hawks with 16 points and 8 rebounds, while John Evans and Kose Egbule both scored in double figures with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Dickinson State took control of the game early, leading 15-6 on a Gus Wright three-pointer just five minutes into the game. With 10:35 left, the Comets finally broke the 10-point mark, but the Blue Hawks still held a 21-11 advantage. The DSU offense hit a lull as a Mayville State pulled to within two, 21-19, with 4:51 left in the half. The Blue Hawks answered back with three free throws to get back up by five, but a MSU layup just before the halftime buzzer made it 30-27 Blue Hawks headed into the break.
Mayville State got to within two, 34-32, four minutes into the second half, but the Blue Hawks responded with a 10-2 run to regain control of the game. Jake Daniel knocked down a three to give the Blue Hawks a 17-point advantage with 8:50 left in the game, and the lead grew to a game-high 23 when Evans knocked down a triple with 4:45 remaining.
A packed Scott Gym was loud all night to help push the Blue Hawks to the dominant upset. "First I just want to thank our students and community for packing the gym tonight," said head coach Derek Selvig. "So cool to see and our guys definitely feed off their energy. Our guys played so hard. It's so much fun to be a part of this group. It was a total team effort tonight."
WHATS NEXT
The Blue Hawks will take their last road trip of the season when they head east to take on Viterbo University and Waldorf University on February 3-4.
