DSU women use great defensive effort to take down Haskell

Madison, S.D. – Dickinson State got 13 points and 11 rebounds from Samantha Oase to snap their 6-game losing skid with a 70-57 win over Haskell Indian Nations on Friday afternoon.

The Blue Hawks outscored HINU in each of the first three quarters to cruise to victory, not allowing a single opposing player to score more than nine points. Kayden Steele had another strong game for DSU, scoring a game-high 16 points, while Katherine Fox and Tinley Pierson each added 10 points.

After both teams scored on their first possessions of the game, the Blue Hawks used a 7-0 lead over the next two minutes to take control of the game. Leading 19-10 after the first quarter, DSU extended their lead in the second, leading by as many as 14 when Steele scored with 1:22 left in the half. A pair of free throws by Teagan Townsend ended the scoring in the first half, as the Blue Hawks led 41-28 heading into the break.

A brilliant defensive third quarter by the Blue Hawks allowed them to really pull away in the contest, holding HINU to just 8 points and extending their lead to 20 points heading into the final frame.

The Blue Hawks dominated the rebounding battle on the day, 46-30, but struggled taking care of the ball, turning it over 25 times on the day.
