Dickinson, N.D. – A shut out effort in game two gave Dickinson State the Sunday split with Mayville State to take the NSAA series 3-1 over the weekend.
GAME 1
A four-run first inning for Mayville State got the Comets out to an early lead that Dickinson State could not overcome as the Blue Hawks dropped game one on Sunday, 9-2.
A three-run third inning for MSU gave them a 7-0 lead before a home run by Cassidy Venner in the bottom of the fourth inning brought home pinch runner Bailey Pepper to get DSU on the board. Venner went 2-3 on the day as the only Blue Hawk with a multi-hit game, while Rhea Paiva and Hailey Enriquez both added doubles for DSU in the loss.
GAME 2
Dallis Mitchell threw a complete game shutout, allowing just five singles, as Dickinson State won the final game of the series, 8-0.
Neither team could get much going offensively until the bottom of the third inning when Rhea Paiva drove her first home run of the season with two-outs to put the Blue Hawks up 1-0. RBI doubles by Ashlee Potter and Paiva were sandwiched around an RBI single by Madeline Peralta in the fourth inning as DSU extended their lead to 5-0.
Mitchell added to her stellar day with a two-RBI single in the sixth inning scoring the final two Blue Hawk runs after an RBI ground out by Ari Martinez scored a run earlier in the inning. Paiva (3-3), Mitchell (3-4), and Peralta (2-3) all collected multiple hits for DSU as they put up 11 hits as a team in game two.
