Blue Hawks fall in four sets to Valley City State

DICKINSON, N.D. – Dickinson State fell in four sets to Valley City State in Frontier Conference action on Thursday afternoon, 25-23, 23-25, 25-23, 25-19, at Scott Gymnasium.

The loss moved the Blue Hawks to 11-13 overall and 7-12 in conference play. Valley City State improved to 11-13 overall and 9-10 in the Frontier.

Makyah Albrecht paced Dickinson State with 16 kills and hit .250 on 44 total attempts. Carmen Pallone added 13 kills and two aces, while Aubrey Allison recorded 11 kills and 22 digs. Rylee Kogolshak directed the offense with 46 assists and added 20 digs, three service aces, and three total blocks.

Defensively, Geraldyne Fernandez finished with a team-best 25 digs. The Blue Hawks tallied 93 digs overall and posted eight service aces as a team.

Dickinson State's best offensive set came in the second, where it posted a .264 hitting percentage with 17 kills and three errors. The Blue Hawks capitalized on late kills from Allison and Pallone to close out the set and even the match at one set each.

The third set remained tight throughout, with six ties and three lead changes. After the Blue Hawks took a brief 19-18 advantage, Valley City State responded with timely kills from Morgan Freije and Emma Lucas to regain the lead. Dickinson State held off one set point but dropped the frame 25-23.

In the fourth, Valley City State limited the Blue Hawks to a .000 hitting percentage and took early control of the set. Fridgen and Freije each contributed double-digit kills for the Vikings, who pulled away late to secure the match.

Overall, Dickinson State was out-hit .181 to .111 and committed 30 attack errors to Valley City's 23.

Dickinson State will honor three seniors, Samantha Oase, Albrecht, and Taylor Fischer, on Friday October, 31, when it hosts Mayville State at 6 p.m. in another Frontier Conference matchup.
