HELENA, Mont. – A strong second-half surge by Carroll College proved too much for Dickinson State, as the Blue Hawks dropped a Frontier Conference road contest, 100-71, Friday night at the PE Center.
Griffyn Doughty led Dickinson State (5-8, 3-4 Frontier) with a game-high 25 points, hitting five three-pointers and going 9-of-20 from the field. DC Stewart and Isaiah Vargas each added 12 points off the bench to pace a Blue Hawk unit that saw 30 points come from reserves.
The first half was tightly contested, with the lead changing hands twice and the game tied three times. DSU took its largest lead of the game at 2-0 on a layup by Cordell Stinson less than 90 seconds in, but Carroll responded with a 9-0 run and never trailed again. Still, the Blue Hawks kept it close through the opening period, trailing just 40-39 at the break.
Doughty had 15 first-half points, while Stinson chipped in seven and Stewart knocked down a pair of three-pointers to help DSU stay within striking distance.
Carroll (8-1, 7-0) turned up the pressure after halftime, outscoring the Blue Hawks 60-32 in the second half. The Saints shot 55.6 percent from the field and were a perfect 15-of-15 from the free-throw line after the break. Isaiah Crane scored 15 of his team-high 25 points in the second half to lead the Saints, who had five players score in double figures and finished with 24 assists on 36 made field goals.
Dickinson State struggled to maintain its first-half shooting pace, going just 11-of-30 from the field and 3-of-16 from beyond the arc in the second period. The Blue Hawks committed 20 turnovers overall, leading to 28 Carroll points.
Jake Daniel recorded four assists and four steals, while Britton Cranston also dished out four assists off the bench. Nate Visentin and Vargas pulled down four rebounds apiece, and Stinson led DSU with six boards.
Dickinson State finished the night shooting 41.3 percent from the field (26-for-63) and 28.6 percent from three-point range (10-for-35). The Blue Hawks were 9-of-16 from the free-throw line and were outrebounded 36-30.
