Tucson, Ariz. – Dickinson State dropped its first game on Thursday, falling to William Penn 6-2, before rebounding with a dominant 15-3 win over Viterbo.
Against William Penn, Dickinson State struck first in the second inning when Bailey Hansen reached on an error, allowing Brooke Lijewski to score. William Penn responded in the bottom half, tying the game on a single before taking a 2-1 lead on a fielder's choice.
The Blue Hawks evened the score in the third. Jersi Morse delivered an RBI single to bring home HaiLeigh Davis. However, William Penn regained control in the fourth when a two-run homer put Dickinson State behind 4-2. Two unearned runs in the fifth extended the deficit.
The Blue Hawks were limited to six hits, with Morse, Allyson Farrington, and Ashlee Potter each contributing a single. Lijewski added a double. Alison Eldridge took the loss, allowing two runs over two innings. Reannan Butler and Ava Jahner combined for four innings in relief, surrendering four runs, two earned.
In the second game, Dickinson State's offense erupted for 15 runs on 11 hits in a five-inning rout of Viterbo.
The Blue Hawks jumped ahead in the first inning when Jessa Duggan stole home before Cierra Cole hit an inside-the-park home run, driving in Jai Maddox-Hernandez. The offense continued in the second as Duggan scored on an error, and Cole added an RBI single.
A six-run fourth inning put the game out of reach. Hannah Skiba singled to bring in Maddox-Hernandez before scoring on a wild pitch. Karissa Comer delivered the big blow, clearing the bases with a three-run double. Dickinson State tacked on four more runs in the fifth, highlighted by Comer's two-run triple.
Comer finished with five RBIs, while Cole added three. Maddox-Hernandez scored three times, and Cassidy Venner drove in a run. Jahner earned the win, allowing two hits over two scoreless innings. Skiba and Butler combined to close out the game.
