Blue Hawks Outlast No. 24 Dakota State in Five-Set Thriller

DICKINSON, N.D. — Dickinson State secured a statement victory Friday night, defeating No. 24-ranked Dakota State in five sets at Scott Gymnasium. The Blue Hawks won the Frontier Conference match 3-0 (20-25, 25-20, 25-21, 16-25, 19-17) to improve to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

Junior outside hitter Aubrey Allison led the attack with 18 kills, 15 digs, and two blocks while hitting .267 on 60 attempts. She finished with a match-high 20.5 points.

After dropping the opening set, Dickinson State responded with a .325 hitting percentage in the second set and followed with a 25-21 win in the third. Dakota State regrouped to force a fifth set with a strong performance in the fourth. The Blue Hawks held off the Trojans in a tightly contested final frame, winning 19-17 on a kill from Allison. DSU had their backs up against the wall, down 14-11, before a 4-0 run put them in the driver's seat in the fifth set.

Freshman Cate Floy added 11 kills and a block, while senior Makyah Albrecht recorded 10 kills and five block assists. Junior setter Rylee Kogolshak paced the offense with 40 assists and added 19 digs. Dickinson State finished the match with 58 kills and a .201 team hitting percentage.

Defensively, junior libero Geraldyne Fernandez collected 19 digs and three service aces. Senior Taylor Fischer contributed 11 digs, and junior Ashtynn Egan added nine. The Blue Hawks tallied 12 total team blocks, including four each from Carmen Pallone and Samantha Oase.

Dickinson State recorded 84 digs as a team and limited the Trojans to a .210 hitting percentage.

"What an incredible game," said head coach Stormy Siemion. "Dakota State is a great team and I knew we would match up with them well. I'm very proud of this team with the fight and heart to never give up is something special."

Dakota State, now 4-2 overall and 0-1 in Frontier Conference play, was ranked No. 24 in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll.
