DICKINSON, N.D. – Dickinson State University's indoor track and field season continued to build momentum this week as two Blue Hawk athletes were recognized by the Frontier Conference for their exceptional performances at the University of Mary Winter Classic.
Adarra Hagelund was named Women's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week after clearing a school-record height in the high jump, while Caleb Sarsland earned Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week honors following a national-qualifying effort in the mile run.
Hagelund soared to a new Dickinson State indoor record in the high jump, clearing 1.76 meters (5 feet, 9.25 inches) to win the event. Her mark not only secured first place at the meet but also vaulted her to the top of the NAIA performance list, where she leads the nation by 0.05 meters. The leap surpassed the previous school record and solidified her as a strong national title contender this season.
"Adarra has had a fantastic opening to her season," said DSU head coach Shayne Wittkopp. "She's consistently been performing at the top of the NAIA. It's a tribute to her hard work over the years in the high jump."
On the men's side, Sarsland continued his rise by claiming the 1-mile title at the Winter Classic with a time of 4:15.00, which converts to 4:11.79 on the flat track. That performance met the NAIA 'B' provisional qualifying standard and currently ranks No. 4 in the NAIA, while also leading the Frontier Conference.
"Caleb has been knocking on the door the last couple years getting qualified in a couple different track events," Wittkopp said. "Last week we knew he was close, so it's great to see him get that standard. It will be exciting to see him get the opportunity to run at the national meet. He works very hard and represents the program very well."
