DICKINSON, N.D. – Despite four players scoring in double figures and a strong start, Dickinson State was unable to hold off a second-half surge from MSU-Northern, falling 92-82 Friday evening in Frontier Conference play at Scott Gymnasium.
The Blue Hawks (6-14, 4-12 Frontier) led by as many as eight points in the first half and held a 23-19 advantage after the first quarter. However, the Skylights (14-6, 10-5 Frontier) used a 28-point third quarter and shot 88 percent from the free-throw line to complete the comeback and secure the road win.
J'ell Garfield led Dickinson State with 22 points on 8-of-15 shooting, including 6-of-10 from beyond the arc. She also added four assists, three rebounds, and one steal. Anhelica Shanrock finished with 21 points and five assists, while Kaylin Garza contributed 20 points, four rebounds, and three steals. Brae Eneboe chipped in 11 points and six rebounds to round out the double-digit scorers for the Blue Hawks.
MSU-Northern was paced by Becky Melcher, who poured in a game-high 28 points, including six 3-pointers, and added four assists. Ciera Agasiva scored 22 points and hit five threes, while Canzas HisBadHorse notched a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Dickinson State shot 45.5 percent from the field and 40.7 percent from 3-point range, but allowed Northern to convert on 46.7 percent of its shots overall and 51.9 percent from long range. The Skylights also held a 40-30 edge on the boards and went 22-for-25 from the line, including 14-for-15 in the fourth quarter.
After building a 43-35 lead in the second quarter behind a flurry of threes from Agasiva and Melcher, the Blue Hawks saw their lead slip away midway through the third. Melcher hit three triples in the frame to push Northern ahead by double digits, and the visitors maintained control from there.
Dickinson State outscored MSU-Northern 25-21 in the fourth quarter but could not overcome a 14-point deficit entering the period.
The Blue Hawk bench was held to eight points compared to nine from the Skylights. Both teams finished with 15 points off turnovers, while Dickinson State held a slight 32-26 edge in points in the paint.
