MAYVILLE, N.D. — Dickinson State earned its second consecutive Frontier Conference sweep Thursday, holding off Mayville State in a tight third set to complete a 3-0 victory (25-19, 25-21, 27-25).
The Blue Hawks improved to 6-11 overall and 5-5 in Frontier play, while Mayville State fell to 0-15 overall and 0-10 in the conference.
Dickinson State used its serve to create separation early, recording 6 aces in the opening set. The Blue Hawks broke a 6-6 tie with a 10-2 stretch to build a 16-8 advantage, with Aubrey Allison serving consecutive aces and Rylee Kogolshak adding another during the run.
Mayville State worked its way back within 19-17, but Dickinson State responded with 3 straight points and eventually closed the set 25-19. Geraldyne Fernandez and Allison each recorded an ace down the stretch, with Allison's third ace of the set providing the final point.
The Blue Hawks carried the momentum into the second, jumping out to a 6-1 lead. Mayville State eventually pulled even at 14, but Dickinson State answered immediately and never surrendered the lead. A 4-0 stretch later pushed the advantage to 22-17 before the Blue Hawks finished off a 25-21 victory.
Mayville State provided its strongest challenge in the third, which featured 14 ties and six lead changes. Dickinson State turned an 18-17 deficit into a 21-18 lead, but the Comets responded and eventually reached set point at 24-23.
Carmen Pallone delivered a kill to keep the match alive and tie the set at 24. Mayville State regained the lead at 25-24 before Allison answered with three consecutive kills to finish the match, giving Dickinson State a 27-25 win and its second straight sweep.
Pallone led the Blue Hawks with a match-high 12 kills while hitting .265. She added 12 digs, 3 aces and 2 blocks. Allison finished with 7 kills, 16 digs and 3 aces.
Kogolshak contributed across the floor with 32 assists, 19 digs, 6 kills and 2 aces. She did not commit an attack error on 10 swings, finishing with a .600 hitting percentage. Paige Rose also recorded 19 digs, while Macie Wheeler had 5 kills and hit .333.
Dickinson State finished with 11 service aces compared with 3 for Mayville State. The Blue Hawks totaled 39 kills and 79 digs while hitting .153.
Dickinson State continues its road trip Friday at Valley City State. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.
