DICKINSON, N.D. — J'ell Garfield scored 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting Saturday as Dickinson State closed its home schedule with a 72-52 Frontier Conference win over Mayville State on Senior Night.
Dickinson State (7-17, 5-15 Frontier Conference) led from start to finish and held Mayville State to three points in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.
The Blue Hawks led 23-16 after one quarter and 40-32 at halftime. Dickinson State extended its advantage in the third and carried a 54-49 lead into the fourth before outscoring the Comets 18-3 in the final period.
Garfield added four rebounds and two assists while knocking down two 3-pointers. Anhelica Shanrock finished with 12 points and five assists. Kaylin Garza, a junior, scored 10 points with two 3-pointers, and Jada Clarkson added 10 points and four rebounds.
Dickinson State shot 45.5% (30 of 66) from the field and 7 of 28 from 3-point range. The Blue Hawks totaled 44 rebounds and 17 assists, committing 14 turnovers while forcing 12.
Mayville State (1-24, 0-20 Frontier Conference) was led by Nevaeh Tormaschy with 13 points. Misti Zemple recorded nine points and 10 rebounds, and Whitney Welk and Jolie Martinson scored eight points each.
The Comets shot 29.2% (19 of 65) from the field and 3 of 28 from 3-point range. Mayville State went 11 of 15 at the free-throw line and shot 1 of 12 in the fourth quarter.
"It was a great team win and a great way to send our seniors out in thier last game in Scott Gym," said head coach Eric Nelson. "We played with energy, effort and attention to detail for 40 minutes. I thought we shared the ball well with our 17 assists and had four players in double figures."
Dickinson State opened the game with a 3-pointer from Garza and maintained control throughout the first half. The Blue Hawks built a double-digit lead late in the second quarter and kept separation over the final 20 minutes.
After Mayville State trimmed the deficit to five late in the third, Dickinson State responded early in the fourth. Garfield scored seven points in the opening minutes of the period, including a 3-pointer, to push the lead back to double digits. The Blue Hawks held the Comets scoreless for more than five minutes in the fourth and limited them to one field goal in the final quarter.
