Dickinson State falls 85-63 to No. 6 Dakota State

Madison, S.D. — No. 6 Dakota State used a 19-4 third quarter to pull away from Dickinson State in an 85-63 Frontier Conference women's basketball game Friday at the DSU Fieldhouse.

Dickinson State (7-18, 5-16 Frontier) trailed 46-39 at the half after shooting 55.6% in the first quarter, but the Blue Hawks were limited to two field goals in the third period as Dakota State (23-4, 18-3 Frontier) extended the margin to 65-43 entering the fourth.

Kaylin Garza led Dickinson State with 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including 2-of-3 from 3-point range, in 16 minutes. J'ell Garfield added 11 points, while Brae Eneboe and Karson Tempel finished with 10 points apiece. Jada Clarkson recorded five points, five rebounds and four assists. Izzy Kelly and Kyrie Alldredge scored five points each off the bench.

Dakota State was led by Tabor Teel and Bria Wasmund with 17 points each. Teel posted 12 rebounds and three blocks, and Wasmund added five assists and five steals. Cierra Watkins and Ella Carstensen scored 12 points apiece, with Watkins going 5-for-5 from the field. Hamtyn Heinz added nine points on three 3-pointers.

The teams traded the lead early, and Dickinson State's largest advantage was five points. Dakota State led 28-23 after one quarter and pushed the margin to seven at the break. Dickinson State totaled 23 points in the opening period and 16 in the second, while Dakota State scored 28 and 18 to take the halftime lead.

Dakota State opened the second half with a run that included three 3-pointers and several transition scores following turnovers. Dickinson State scored four points in the third quarter, going 2 of 14 from the field in the period. The Trojans won the quarter 19-4 and led by as many as 31 points during the second half.

Dickinson State shot 41.3% (26 of 63) for the game and went 5 of 16 from beyond the arc. Dakota State shot 41.0% (34 of 83) and made 11 3-pointers. Dickinson State finished with 15 assists and 21 turnovers; Dakota State had 16 assists and 10 turnovers.

Dakota State forced 21 Dickinson State turnovers and recorded 17 steals, leading to a 22-8 edge in points off turnovers. The Trojans also held advantages in points in the paint (46-26), fast-break points (33-11) and second-chance points (10-5). Dickinson State scored 20 bench points, led by Tempel's 10.

The fourth quarter was even at 20-20, with Dickinson State shooting 57.1% (8 of 14) in the period and hitting 4 of 7 free throws. Allie Kohn grabbed seven rebounds and added three assists, and Kelly collected six rebounds.

Dakota State finished with a 46-42 rebounding edge, including 15 offensive rebounds, while Dickinson State collected 36 defensive boards. Clarkson and Kohn each had four turnovers, and the Blue Hawks committed 11 fouls. Dakota State converted 6 of 10 at the line and had 29 bench points.
