MITCHELL, S.D. — Dickinson State dropped both games of a Sunday doubleheader to Dakota Wesleyan at Drake Field, falling 4-3 in the opener and 5-1 in the finale.
Dickinson State moved to 4-8 overall with the losses.
Game 1: Dakota Wesleyan 4, Dickinson State 3
Dickinson State carried a one-run lead into the bottom of the seventh inning, but Dakota Wesleyan scored twice to secure a 4-3 walk-off victory in the opener.
The Blue Hawks took an early lead in the second inning. Jadyn Roberts doubled and later scored on an error to make it 1-0. Dakota Wesleyan answered with two runs to move in front 2-1 before DSU responded in the sixth.
Jace Buchanan tripled to open the inning and scored on a Ty Farwell RBI single to tie the game at 2-2. After Sawyer Bryner entered as a pinch runner, Bryner and Wyatt Wilharm executed a double steal to move into scoring position. Jaden Salazar followed with an RBI single to give Dickinson State a 3-2 advantage.
Patrick Dietz worked 6.0 innings in the start, allowing two runs on six hits with four strikeouts. Trent Chavez came on in relief in the seventh and was charged with the loss as Dakota Wesleyan plated the tying and winning runs.
Dickinson State had opportunities to extend the lead but was unable to add insurance before the final inning.
Game 2: Dakota Wesleyan 5, Dickinson State 1
Dickinson State scored first in the second game but was limited to one run in a 5-1 loss.
Luis Rodriguez doubled in the top of the first inning and later scored on a Ty Farwell RBI single to give the Blue Hawks a 1-0 lead.
Dakota Wesleyan responded with three runs over the next two innings to take control. The Blue Hawks were held scoreless the rest of the way.
Dominic Phillips started and worked 5.0 innings, recording eight strikeouts while allowing three runs, one earned. Dakota Wesleyan added two runs in the sixth inning to extend the margin.
Rodriguez led Dickinson State at the plate in the finale, finishing 2-for-4.
