Blue Hawks sweep Peru State in Friday road doubleheader

PERU, Neb. — Dickinson State opened its weekend series with a sweep of Peru State on Friday, earning a 16-3 victory in Game 1 before holding on for a 3-2 win in Game 2.

The Blue Hawks combined for 22 hits across the two games and received strong outings on the mound to secure both wins on the road.

Game 1: Dickinson State 16, Peru State 3

Dickinson State's offense set the tone early in the opener, scoring seven runs in the first inning and adding five more in the second to take control.

Roberts provided the early spark with a three-run home run in the first inning as part of the seven-run frame. The Blue Hawks sent 11 hitters to the plate in the inning and added five runs in the second to extend the lead to 12-0.

Teran paced the offense, finishing 3-for-5 with four RBI, including a run-scoring triple in the third inning. Dokes collected three hits and drove in two runs, while Wilharm added two hits and three RBI. Dickinson State finished with 16 runs on 16 hits.

The Blue Hawks added three runs in the third inning to build a 15-3 advantage after three innings of play. Peru State plated all three of its runs in the bottom of the second.

Lunzman earned the win after working six innings. He allowed three runs and struck out five. Hanson pitched a scoreless seventh inning to close out the run-rule shortened contest.

Dickinson State did not commit an error in the game and limited Peru State's opportunities after the second inning.

Game 2: Dickinson State 3, Peru State 2

Game 2 featured a tighter contest, with Dickinson State scoring all three of its runs in the third inning.

Finders opened the third with a single to start the rally. Roberts followed later in the inning with a two-run home run to give the Blue Hawks a 2-0 lead. Rodriguez reached base during the frame and later came around to score as Dickinson State executed on the bases to extend the lead to 3-0.

The Blue Hawks totaled six hits in the nightcap. Roberts accounted for two RBI with his home run, while the lineup produced timely at-bats to capitalize on its scoring opportunity in the third.

Peru State answered with a run in the fourth inning and added another in the fifth to cut the deficit to one. Dickinson State's pitching staff worked out of traffic over the final two innings to preserve the win.

Williams earned the victory after pitching five innings and allowing two runs while striking out seven. Santiago Jr. delivered a scoreless sixth inning in relief. Chavez recorded the save with a scoreless seventh inning, closing the door on Peru State's comeback attempt.

Dickinson State again played error-free defense in Game 2 and limited Peru State to two runs despite pressure in the middle innings.

With the sweep, the Blue Hawks secured two road wins to open the series and will continue action against Peru State on Saturday.
