Blue Hawks split road doubleheader at Peru State

PERU, Neb. — Dickinson State earned a split in Saturday's seven-inning doubleheader at Peru State, winning the opener 3-1 before falling 6-4 in the nightcap.

Game 1: Dickinson State 3, Peru State 1

Dickinson State used timely hitting and a complete-game effort from Patrick Dietz to open the day with a 3-1 win.

Dietz went the distance, allowing one run on three hits with two walks and five strikeouts in seven innings to improve to 1-1. Peru State scored its lone run in the fourth inning after a walk and two passed balls.

The Blue Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Moses Dokes doubled to left-center and later scored on Kadin Finders' RBI single to left.

Dickinson State added a run in the fifth. Jace Buchanan singled to open the inning and later scored when Wyatt Wilharm drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 2-0.

The Blue Hawks extended the lead to 3-1 in the seventh. Dokes singled and Sawyer Bryner entered as a pinch runner. Jaden Salazar followed with an RBI double to right, scoring Bryner.

Dickinson State finished with eight hits. Wilharm, Dokes and Salazar each recorded doubles.

Game 2: Peru State 6, Dickinson State 4

Peru State scored in five different innings and held off a late Dickinson State rally to earn a 6-4 win in the second game.

Peru State opened the scoring in the bottom of the first. Mercader tripled and later scored on a double-play groundout for a 1-0 lead.

Dickinson State tied the game in the second. Dokes walked and later scored when Ramon Teran reached on an error, with the run credited as an RBI.

Peru State responded with three runs in the bottom of the second to move in front 4-1. The inning included an RBI reach on error by Mercader and an RBI single by Solla.

Peru State added another run in the fourth on George's RBI single to make it 5-1.

Dickinson State closed the gap in the fifth. Buchanan walked and later scored on Dokes' sacrifice fly. The Blue Hawks then scored twice on passed balls, with Bryner and Wilharm each crossing the plate to tie the game at 5-5.

Peru State regained the lead in the sixth. Solla scored on a fielder's choice following an error to put the hosts ahead 6-5.

Dominic Phillips took the loss for Dickinson State and fell to 0-2. Cooper VanLuchene pitched 3 1/3 innings in relief with four strikeouts. Korte earned the win for Peru State to move to 1-2, and Pavletich recorded the save.
