Blue Hawks split Saturday games in Sioux Center

SIOUX CENTER— Dickinson State split a pair of games Saturday, falling 7-1 to Dordt in the opener before responding with a 16-0 win over Haskell Indian Nations University. 

Dordt (IA) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Lauren Steenstra after a two-out hit and a wild pitch moved a runner into scoring position. 

The game remained 1-0 until the fourth, when Sumaya Edwards opened the inning with a solo home run to center. Dordt added five more runs in the frame on five hits, including an RBI single by Tera Price, an RBI single by Chloe Kreuz and a two-run double by Rylee Yager. Lauren Steenstra capped the inning with an RBI single to extend the lead to 7-0. 

Dickinson State broke through in the fifth. Jaydin Sabol doubled to right center and advanced to third on a passed ball. Bailee Mitchell followed with an RBI single to left to cut the deficit to 7-1. The Blue Hawks later put two runners in scoring position in the inning, but Dordt worked out of the threat. 

The Blue Hawks were limited to four hits. Sabol finished with a double and a run scored, while Mitchell drove in the lone run. Jessa Duggan and Ashlee Potter each added a single. 

Reannan Butler took the loss, allowing six earned runs over 3 1/3 innings. Reagan King provided 2 2/3 innings of relief, giving up one run. 

In the second game, Dickinson State (7-5) scored 16 runs on 15 hits to secure a run-rule victory over Haskell Indian Nations University (0-9). 

The Blue Hawks scored five runs in the first inning. Stocktyn Stevenson walked, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Brooke Lijewski. Kiley Hubby and Jaydin Sabol each delivered RBI doubles, and Emily Madrid and Bailee Mitchell added RBI singles to make it 5-0. 

Dickinson State added nine runs in the second inning. The Blue Hawks recorded six hits and drew five walks in the frame. Highlights included a two-run single by Stevenson, an RBI walk by Baylee Berg and a three-run double by Octavia Meyer. Sabol later added an RBI single as the lead grew to 14-0. 

The Blue Hawks pushed two more runs across in the third. After two walks, Viennah Meyer delivered a two-run single to left to extend the margin to 16-0. 

Madrid led the offense, going 3-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Sabol finished with two hits and four RBIs, while Stevenson scored twice and drove in two. Octavia Meyer recorded a double and three RBIs in relief duty. 

Hope Fath earned the win, throwing three scoreless innings and striking out four while allowing one hit. Ava Jahner worked the final two innings to complete the shutout. 

Dickinson State concludes play in Sioux Center with a 1-3 record on the weekend.
