DICKINSON, N.D. - Dickinson State split a home doubleheader against University of Providence on Friday at Bravera Field, winning the opener 6-1 before falling 9-0 in five innings in the nightcap.
Dickinson State (13-8) scored all six of its runs in the first two innings and received a complete-game effort from Reagan King to secure the victory.
The Blue Hawks opened the scoring in the first inning. Stocktyn Stevenson walked and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Allyson Farrington. Celina Wilharm singled to left field, putting runners at the corners. Wilharm stole second before Brooke Lijewski hit a three-run home run to left field, giving Dickinson State a 3-0 lead.
Providence (8-14) answered in the second inning. Erin Bishop doubled to center field and advanced to third on a single by Alix Bishop. Tiffany Fuentes lifted a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Erin Bishop to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Dickinson State responded in the bottom of the second. Jessa Duggan doubled to left field and Ashlee Potter walked. Stevenson followed with a single to third base to load the bases. Farrington delivered a two-run single to center, scoring Duggan and Potter and advancing Stevenson to third. After Wilharm was hit by a pitch, Lijewski added a sacrifice fly to center to bring home Stevenson and extend the lead to 6-1.
That would be all the scoring for either team.
King (5-2) went the distance, allowing one run on six hits. She did not issue a walk and struck out three. Providence threatened in the fourth and fifth innings, including a triple by Aleana Aionaaka in the fifth, but King worked out of both situations.
Dickinson State finished with seven hits. Lijewski drove in four runs, while Farrington had two RBIs. Duggan recorded two hits.
Providence (9-14) used two home runs and a five-run third inning to earn the split.
The Argos took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a solo home run to center field by Tehneson Ehnes.
Providence broke the game open in the third. After two singles and a pair of fielder's choice plays that recorded outs at home, Erin Bishop hit a three-run home run to left field, scoring Tehneson Ehnes, Kasidy Yeoman and Aleana Aionaaka to make it 5-0.
The Argos added four runs in the fifth inning. Aionaaka doubled to left and scored on a triple by Yeoman. Ehnes followed with an RBI single to center. Erin Bishop later doubled to center to score Ehnes, and Ella Galloway added an RBI single to center to cap the scoring at 9-0.
Dickinson State was limited to four hits. Farrington doubled in the first inning and Duggan recorded two singles. The Blue Hawks advanced a runner to third in the first but were unable to score.
Reannan Butler started and allowed five runs in 2 2/3 innings. Ava Jahner and Hope Fath combined to pitch the final 2 1/3 innings.
Dickinson State moves to 13-9 on the season following the split.
