SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Dickinson State split a Sunday doubleheader at the Frontier Conference Preseason Classic, falling to Dakota State 11-2 before defeating Valley City State 6-5.
Dickinson State now stands at 14-13 overall.
Dickinson State vs. Dakota State
Dakota State used an early surge to defeat Dickinson State 11-2 in the opener.
Dakota State scored one run in the first inning and added three more in the second before extending the lead to 6-0 through three innings. Dickinson State recorded nine hits but was limited to two runs.
Jadyn Roberts led the Blue Hawks offensively, going 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs. Kadin Finders finished 2-for-2 with a run scored, while Ramon Teran added two hits. Moses Dokes recorded a double.
Dickinson State scored its first run in the fifth inning. Dokes doubled and later scored on an RBI single from Roberts. Roberts added a second RBI in the seventh with a triple following a two-out single by Finders.
Patrick Dietz took the loss, allowing six runs, two earned, over three innings. Rogelio Gonzalez pitched three innings in relief, and Mason Manning worked a scoreless seventh inning.
Dakota State totaled 12 hits and capitalized on six Dickinson State errors.
Dickinson State vs. Valley City State
Dickinson State responded with a 6-5 win over Valley City State in the second game.
The Blue Hawks scored three runs in the third inning to take an early lead. Jaden Salazar opened the inning with a double, Finders walked, and Roberts followed with an RBI single. Jace Buchanan and Ty Farwell each added RBI singles to give Dickinson State a 3-0 advantage.
Valley City State answered with five runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 5-3 lead. Dickinson State responded in the bottom half of the inning to regain control.
Buchanan led off with a single, and Farwell followed with a base hit. Teran reached on a strikeout and wild pitch, allowing Buchanan to score. Wyatt Wilharm was hit by a pitch, and Dokes reached on an error that brought home two runs, including the go-ahead run.
Mason Lunzman earned the win, pitching five innings and allowing five runs on nine hits with four strikeouts. Tyler Cutler pitched a scoreless sixth inning, and Trent Chavez secured the save with a scoreless seventh.
Buchanan and Farwell each recorded two hits. Roberts added an RBI and scored a run, while Salazar doubled and scored. Finders drew three walks and scored twice.
Dickinson State finished with six hits and took advantage of four walks, a hit batter and a Valley City State error.
