WATERTOWN, S.D. – John Evans and Gus Wright combined for 30 points to lead the Dickinson State offense, but top-seeded Mayville State proved to be too much as the Comets raced to an 80-63 win and the North Star Athletic Association conference tournament title.
Mayville State led almost the entire game, never trailing at any point, as Dickinson State had their five-game winning streak snapped. Evans knocked down a three-pointer with 15:57 left in the first half to tie the score at 9-9, but the Comet lead ballooned to 16, 32-16, with 7:51 left in the half to take control of the contest.
Christian Murphy chipped in 8 points and 6 rebounds for the Blue Hawks, while Jake Daniel added 8 points on 2-4 shooting off the bench. Kose Egbule scored 6 points and dished 6 assists, but the Blue Hawks were held to just 34 percent shooting from the field by a strong Mayville State defense.
After finishing tied for second place in the NSAA regular season, the Blue Hawks stormed their way to the finals with an opening round win over Dakota State at home before using a big comeback effort to get past upset-minded Waldorf in the semi-finals. Having no seniors on the roster, the Blue Hawks future looks bright under head coach Derek Selvig.
"It was a disappointing end to the season," said Selvig. "We just ran out of gas. Mayville State is a very talented team and they have played well all year long. I'm proud of our guys and the accomplishments we had this year. The future is bright for the Blue Hawks."
