Blue Hawks Name Joe Schmidt as New Head Rodeo Coach

DICKINSON, N.D. – Dickinson State University (DSU) Athletics is proud to announce the hiring of Joe Schmidt as the next Head Rodeo Coach for the Blue Hawks. Schmidt brings an impressive record of success both in and out of the arena, with over 45 Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) wins to his name.

As a college rodeo athlete, Schmidt was a four-time College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) participant and a two-time Great Plains Region Champion Calf Roper. His wealth of competitive experience and dedication to the sport will be instrumental in continuing the growth and success of the DSU Rodeo program.

"I am extremely excited to take over the rodeo program at DSU," Schmidt said. "My family and I are honored to be tasked with leading the team into an exciting and bright future."

The DSU Rodeo Team currently competes in the Great Plains Region of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA). The program is poised for a new era with the upcoming completion of a $25 million renovation to the university's indoor rodeo arena and agricultural building. Once complete, the facility will serve as a premier center for rodeo development, competition, and education in southwest North Dakota.

"Community, in the sport of rodeo is everything. One of the main focuses for our team now and years down the road is welcoming the community to campus and being great partners with those in our area", said Schmidt.

"We are excited for Joe to be our next head rodeo coach," said Pete Stanton, DSU Athletic Director. "He is a former Blue Hawk and has a lot of ties to the community and region. With the new arena, it is an exciting time to look forward to DSU Rodeo."
