Doughty scores 35 as Dickinson State tops Valley City State 79-73

DICKINSON, N.D. — Griffyn Doughty scored a game-high 35 points Friday night to lead Dickinson State to a 79-73 win over Valley City State in a Frontier Conference men's basketball game.

Dickinson State (8-17, 6-13 Frontier) trailed 35-34 at halftime before outscoring the Vikings 45-38 in the second half to secure the victory.

Doughty finished 11 of 19 from the field, including 5 of 12 from 3-point range, and converted all eight of his free-throw attempts. He scored 16 points in the first half and added 19 after the break, including key baskets during a late stretch that helped the Blue Hawks regain control.

Cordell Stinson added 11 points and six rebounds for Dickinson State. Isaiah Vargas contributed eight points, while Weston Zacher totaled seven points and seven rebounds. Britton Cranston came off the bench to score seven points, and Detavius Frierson added six points and two assists.

The Blue Hawks shot 42.4% (25 of 59) from the field and 35.0% (7 of 20) from beyond the arc. After going 1 of 9 from 3-point range in the first half, Dickinson State connected on 6 of 11 attempts from long distance in the second.

Dickinson State converted 22 of 29 free throws and forced 18 Valley City State turnovers, turning those into 23 points. The Blue Hawks committed 11 turnovers and scored 10 second-chance points.

"Really proud of our effort tonight. Guys battled," said head coach Derek Selvig. "We have a few guys battling some illness so I think we showed a ton of grit to pull that one out. We have to bounce back and do it again against Mayville State if we want to extend our season."

Valley City State (9-15, 5-14 Frontier) was led by Joel Nelson with 25 points on 9-of-15 shooting, including 5 of 7 from 3-point range. Kaleb Larson added 12 points and six rebounds. JR Cison scored eight points and dished out four assists, and Jaelyn Johnson finished with six points off the bench.

The Vikings shot 40.0% (26 of 65) from the field and 7 of 22 from 3-point range. Valley City State held a 45-35 advantage on the boards and went 12 of 16 at the free-throw line.

Dickinson State's bench contributed 22 points as the Blue Hawks closed out the regular-season home contest with the conference win.
