Blue Hawks Close Season at NAIA Men’s Wrestling National Championships

WICHITA, Kan. - The Dickinson State men's wrestling team concluded its season at the 69th Annual NAIA Men's Wrestling National Championships, held March 5–7 at Heartland Credit Union Arena. The Blue Hawks were represented by four national qualifiers and finished with 7.5 team points through the opening sessions of the three-day tournament.

Dickinson State qualified wrestlers in four weight classes following a fifth-place finish at the Heart of America Athletic Conference Championships. Wyatt Engwicht (125), Jackson King (184), Donivan Giangregorio (197), and Seth Suvak (285) represented the Blue Hawks on the national stage.

At 125 pounds, Engwicht opened the tournament against Kobi Johnson of Providence in the championship first round. Johnson secured a fall at the 0:49 mark to send Engwicht to the consolation bracket. Engwicht later faced Matteo Vargo of Cumberlands in the opening consolation round, where Vargo recorded a fall at 6:21 to end Engwicht's tournament.

King competed at 184 pounds and opened his championship bracket match against August Batson of Southeastern. Batson earned a 12-9 decision to send King to the consolation side. King responded in the first consolation round with a fall over Zahquel Davis of Brewton-Parker at 6:30 to remain in the tournament. His run ended in the following round after Cory Cannan of Lindsey Wilson recorded a 14-2 major decision.

Giangregorio competed at 197 pounds and opened the national tournament against fourth-seeded Elijah Hynes of Missouri Valley. Hynes secured a narrow 8-7 decision in the championship round. Giangregorio responded with a strong performance in consolation round one, defeating Tyler Rowland of Cumberland by major decision, 15-2. His tournament concluded in the next round following a 9-1 major decision by Elias Corona of Southern Oregon.

At heavyweight, Suvak turned in the deepest run for Dickinson State during the championship. Suvak opened the tournament with a fall over 15th-seeded Emmett Bivens of Wayland Baptist at the 5:00 mark in the championship first round. He then faced second-seeded Kenneth Copley of Embry-Riddle in the round of 16, where Copley secured a fall at 4:36.

Moving into the consolation bracket, Suvak earned a 1-0 decision over Treyshawn White of Cumberlands to continue his run. His tournament came to an end in consolation round three when Luke Cox of Georgetown advanced by disqualification.

Through the early portion of day two, Dickinson State accumulated 7.5 team points and sat in 34th place in the team standings. Grand View led the team race with 111.5 points, followed by Life with 91.0 and Oklahoma City with 54.5.

The national championships marked the final competition of the season for the Blue Hawks. Dickinson State concluded the year with four national qualifiers, a fifth-place finish at the Heart of America Athletic Conference Championships, and a 19th-place finish earlier in the season at the NAIA National Championship Preview hosted by Missouri Valley College.

The Blue Hawks also spent much of the season receiving votes in the NAIA national team poll while competing in one of the country's strongest wrestling conferences in the Heart of America Athletic Conference.
