Dickinson State Women win Fall Invitational, Blue Hawk Men finish runner-up

DICKINSON, N.D. — Dickinson State won the women's team title and finished second in the men's competition at the Dickinson State University Fall Invitational, held Monday and Tuesday at Heart River Golf Course in Dickinson and Pheasant Country Golf Course in South Heart.

The opening round was played Monday at Heart River before the tournament shifted to Pheasant Country for Tuesday's final round. The Blue Hawk women posted a two-round total of 687 to win the four-team field by 63 strokes over Mayville State, while Dickinson State's men's first team finished five strokes behind Mayville with a 630.

Dickinson State controlled much of the top of the women's leaderboard. The Blue Hawks placed five golfers among the first seven finishers and seven inside the top 10, led by senior Brooklyn Materi's runner-up finish.

Materi recorded rounds of 82 and 83 for a 165 total, finishing two strokes behind Valley City State's Sadie Neustel, who earned medalist honors at 163. Kiaralynn Weidinger gave Dickinson State another top-five finisher, placing fourth at 168.

Freshman Addie Robbins led Dickinson State's Gray team and finished fifth overall at 173 after rounds of 86 and 87. Cheyenne Jacobs and Camille Poncin tied for sixth at 179, while Izzabella Weber placed eighth at 183 and Jori Haugen finished 10th at 189.

The depth produced considerable separation in the team race. Dickinson State's Blue team finished at 687, 63 strokes ahead of Mayville State and 75 ahead of Valley City State.

The men's competition remained much tighter. Mayville State won with a 625, Dickinson State Blue finished five strokes back at 630 and Valley City State was another stroke behind at 631. Just six strokes separated the top three teams after 36 holes.

Freshman Griffin Zimmer paced Dickinson State with a third-place finish at 152. Zimmer followed an opening-round 78 at Heart River with a 74 at Pheasant Country, the third-lowest final-round score in the 31-player field. Sam Lewton gave the Blue Hawks another top-five finisher, placing fourth at 155 after rounds of 77 and 78.

Junior Henry Maughan supplied one of the tournament's memorable moments Tuesday, recording a hole-in-one on the par-3 second hole at Pheasant Country. Maughan also cut six strokes from his opening round, following an 83 with a 77 to finish seventh at 160 and lead Dickinson State's Gray team.

The Gray team made a move of its own in the final round, improving 10 strokes from 327 at Heart River to 317 at Pheasant Country. Eric DeBoer matched Maughan with a 77 Tuesday, while Camden Smith shot 80. Smith and Kaden Bishop joined Dickinson State Blue's Emersyn Lee in a tie for eighth at 161.

In all, Dickinson State placed six golfers inside the men's top 10. Carter Ostlund, competing individually, tied for 14th at 165 after improving nine strokes from an opening 87 to a final-round 78.

The Blue Hawks return to competition Sept. 21-22 at the Frontier Conference Meet at Wildflower Golf Course in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.
