Materi Finishes runner-up to lead Dickinson State at Beartooth Invitational

LAUREL, Mont. — Senior Brooklyn Materi finished runner-up to lead the Dickinson State women to a fourth-place team finish as the Blue Hawks completed the Beartooth Invitational on Tuesday at Laurel Golf Club.

Materi posted rounds of 74, 78 and 73 to finish the 54-hole tournament at 225 (+9). She saved her best round for Tuesday, closing with a 1-over 73 for the lowest round by a Dickinson State woman during the tournament.

The Blue Hawk women finished fourth at 153-over and improved their team score in each round. Dickinson State opened at 58-over, cut five strokes with a 53-over second round Monday and closed with its best round of the tournament at 42-over Tuesday.

Camille Poncin gave Dickinson State another top-15 finish, tying for 14th at 261 (+45). Poncin closed with an 84 Tuesday, five strokes better than her second-round score.

Kiaralynn Weidinger made the Blue Hawks' largest improvement in the final round. After rounds of 92 and 89 Monday, Weidinger shot an 82 Tuesday to move into a tie for 18th at 263 (+47). Cheyenne Jacobs tied for 22nd at 270 (+54), Addie Robbins placed 26th at 276 (+60) and Jori Haugen finished 30th at 284 (+68).

Materi has now led Dickinson State individually in each of the Blue Hawks' first four fall tournaments. She opened the season with a fourth-place finish at the NDGA College Meet, followed with a runner-up finish at the Dickinson State Fall Invitational and placed ninth at the first Frontier Conference Meet before adding her second runner-up finish of the fall Tuesday.

On the men's side, sophomore Sam Lewton led Dickinson State with a 23rd-place finish at 230 (+14). Lewton opened with a 1-over 73, the lowest round by a Blue Hawk during the tournament, before rounds of 81 and 76.

Brady Collins and Griffin Zimmer tied for 25th at 233 (+17). Collins produced Dickinson State's low score of the second round, bouncing back from an opening 82 with a 2-over 74 before finishing with a 77. Zimmer posted matching 75s Monday before an 83 in the final round.

Torrin Ellis tied for 36th at 245 (+29), while Eric DeBoer finished tied for 38th at 249 (+33). DeBoer improved in each round and led Dickinson State on Tuesday with an 80 after opening with rounds of 85 and 84. Henry Maughan placed 44th at 258 (+42).

The Blue Hawk men finished sixth at 74-over. Dickinson State opened with a 22-over team round Monday morning, followed with rounds of 24-over and 28-over.

The Beartooth Invitational was Dickinson State's fourth tournament of the fall. The Blue Hawk women have won twice through the opening four events, while Materi has finished inside the top 10 in each tournament, including a pair of runner-up finishes. The Dickinson State men recorded their best team finish of the fall at their home invitational, where they placed second.

Dickinson State returns to competition Oct. 5-6 at the Frontier Conference Meet at Bill Roberts Golf Course in Helena, Montana.
